The Deployment Planning team’s mandate is to build tools and conduct research that equip OpenAI to prepare for safe and successful deployment of increasingly advanced AI. 

About the role

We’re seeking an experienced machine learning researcher to shape and lead the Deployment Planning team’s ML research agenda. 

This is an opportunity to pioneer and prototype new approaches for testing and evaluating the most advanced AI systems – and to harness the most advanced AI systems to do so. The role will include research on the development of novel evaluation methods and interventions for things like dangerous model capabilities and existential risks, fairness and representation, as well as untruthful, hallucinatory, or otherwise undesired model behavior.

In addition, you’ll:

• Research upstream interventions at the level of training data, pre-training, and training
• Research and prototype novel evaluation methods in areas such as dangerous model capabilities and existential risks, fairness and representation, as well as untruthful, hallucinatory, or otherwise undesired model behavior. 
• Work with downstream product and infrastructure teams to build and scale effective tools for responsible deployment
• Develop and mentor ML Researchers on the Deployment Planning team
• Architect and develop interventions that improve real world impact

We Expect You To:

• Have a track record of coming up with new ideas or improving upon existing ideas in machine learning, demonstrated by accomplishments such as first author publications or projects
• Possess the ability to own and pursue a research agenda, including choosing impactful research problems and autonomously carrying out long-running projects
• Have experience developing novel techniques for ML model measurement and mitigation
• Have experience in research mentorship, leading project teams, and setting technical direction
• Be comfortable working cross functionally across both research and product teams

About the Team

We’re forming a new team to work with our partners on accelerator optimization and co-design, and are looking for a founding tech lead and engineering manager.

This team will be responsible for identifying promising new AI accelerators, building frameworks and compilers, and porting our models to these new accelerators.

While primarily a software team, this team will be multidisciplinary and include experts in hardware design as well as data center facility design.

About the Team

OpenAI’s Hardware Health team oversees all hardware health related aspects of our custom-built hyperscale supercomputers. The team is responsible for maximizing the available supercomputing capacity for research and ensuring that our researchers are minimally impacted by hardware faults.

The hardware health team is being incubated inside OpenAI’s Scaling team, which operates at the far edge of all available innovations in AI — doing the engineering and research required to train large-scale AI models of unprecedented capability.

About the Role

As a Tech Lead in Hardware Health, you will serve as the main point of contact for the team and work closely with the Scaling team to develop strategy and deliver on goals. You will oversee the maintenance of a sophisticated and comprehensive suite of hardware health tests, lead projects to root-cause newly-discovered issues, and ensure that the research team is minimally impacted by hardware faults.  As the team grows, we would ideally like for this person to become the Engineering Manager.

The team moves at a fast pace, and a successful Tech Lead will be supportive of team members while providing a strong sense of direction and focus.

An ideal candidate would have:

• Prior experience as a Tech Lead or similar leadership role
• Proven ability to lead and manage projects from start to finish
• Technical expertise with Python, shell scripting, SQL, PromQL, and Pandas
• Experience developing reproducible analyses, dashboards, and visualizations
• A high level of detail orientation and a good intuition for when results are “too good/bad to be true”
• A strong sense of ownership causing them to very carefully monitor outcome of deployed updates

Bonus Points if you have expertise and interest in low-level details of hardware components, protocols, and associated linux tooling (PCIe, networking, power management, kernel perf tuning)

The Revenue Systems Manager is responsible for managing the monthly billing and revenue close activities, and ensuring that the organization's revenue processes are efficient, accurate, and compliant with relevant laws and regulations.

About the Role

We are looking for a Revenue Systems Manager to manage our order-to-cash process from end to end. You will oversee the monthly billing cycle, accounts receivable, and payment reconciliations across the organization’s product offerings, with opportunities to drive efficiency and build for scale. 

This role will report to the Head of Revenue Accounting and Operations and will work closely with Engineering, Product, GTM, Legal, and other cross-functional partners. You will be a key player in driving success of the organization by building and sustaining world-class revenue systems and operations.

• Manage revenue month-end close activities, including billing, account receivable, allowance for doubtful accounts, payment reconciliations
• Align data reporting and settlement reconciliations to monitor health of receivables

• Collaborate with Legal, GTM, Product & Engineering to advise on accounting/billing impact of new and existing initiatives

We’re looking for a blend of:

• 5+ years of progressive experience within revenue accounting and operations

• Strong understanding of order-to-cash cycle, including experience working with revenue systems and payment processors (e.g. Stripe)
• Strong analytical skills and comfort with high-volume data in Excel; SQL is a plus

About the Program

The OpenAI Residency provides a pathway for engineers and researchers to transition into the field of artificial intelligence. Residents build on their existing experience while learning and working on practical problems with our teams. As a Research Resident, you’ll be embedded within our Research or Applied teams working on real, cutting-edge AI problems. Residents will be compensated as fully salaried employees for the duration of the program.

About the Role

The OpenAI Research Residency is ideal for researchers with expertise in a scientific field outside of deep learning who would like to transition into a Research Scientist or Research Engineer position in the field of AI. We seek a record of achievement in a field such as mathematics, physics, or neuroscience. As a Resident on the Research track, you will work closely with a team of machine learning researchers to build AI systems that can perform previously impossible tasks and achieve unprecedented levels of performance to advance the research agenda of your team.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Published research in a STEM field or equivalent practical research experience
• Have proficiency in programming languages 
• Have a strong math background and understanding of linear algebra, calculus, and statistics
• Have achievements in another field, such as creating a large software system, awards in math/science/programming contests, or authoring highly cited publications
• Be available and interested in joining OpenAI full-time after completing the Residency
• Have taken the initiative to jump right in and begin self-study of the fundamentals of ML
• Motivated to discover AI breakthroughs and their potential benefits to humanity

About the Role

As a Research Engineer here, you will be responsible for building AI systems that can perform previously impossible tasks or achieve unprecedented levels of performance. • Mathgen: Help models learn to solve problems in informal natural text and prove theorems in formal languages like Lean. Large language models are known to make false claims that sound plausible, while mathematics requires the utmost rigor so training models that can reason robustly is a critical step on the path to AGI. Recent projects: Training Verifiers and Solving Olympiad Problems.

• Policy Research: Measure the risks, benefits, and overall impact of our technology on the world with an eye towards informing our policies and those of other institutions. Develop novel ways of characterizing model properties, work with internal and external partners to measure our economic impact, and build novel mitigations that help us safely deploy models in an iterative fashion. Conduct far-sighted research on ideal governance and regulation of powerful AI systems.

• Scaling: Build the model training software stack, solving problems at all layers of the stack including iteration speed, observability, compute efficiency, correctness, and fault detection and recovery. Scaling owns the engineering and research required to harness custom-built hyperscale supercomputers, the latest algorithmic improvements, and massive datasets to train AI models of unprecedented capability.

About the role

We seek an Associate General Counsel to be the lead advisor on corporate counseling, strategic transactions, securities compliance, and internal security. A dual affiliation with the OpenAI Startup Fund advising on investments and fund operations is also a possibility. You'll report to OpenAI's General Counsel and work closely with our Legal, Finance, People teams and external counsel.

About the team

The Deployment Planning team’s mandate is to build tools and conduct research that equips OpenAI to prepare for the safe and successful deployment of increasingly advanced AI. Our team’s work involves working “upstream” before models are trained. About the role

We are looking for a software engineer highly skilled in front-end and UX to build out and improve the technical tools we use to build out mitigations in our public-facing interfaces in close collaboration with our Product and Design teams. We’re particularly interested in improving the sociotechnical tools we use to evaluate the effectiveness of mitigations that inform users what an AI system can and cannot be trusted to do safely and robustly.

• Design and implement new ways of interacting with AI models and systems

• Policy Research: Measure the risks, benefits, and overall impact of our technology on the world with an eye towards informing our policies and those of other institutions. Conduct far-sighted research on ideal governance and regulation of powerful AI systems.

• Scaling: Build the model training software stack, solving problems at all layers of the stack including iteration speed, observability, compute efficiency, correctness, and fault detection and recovery. Scaling owns the engineering and research required to harness custom-built hyperscale supercomputers, the latest algorithmic improvements, and massive datasets to train AI models of unprecedented capability.

About the Role

We’re looking for a newly created Director of Equity Administration to lead all aspects of OpenAI’s equity program, aligned to our mission-driven capped-profit structure. You will oversee and administer our bespoke equity plan, ensure compliance with relevant regulations, and provide education and support to the company. The Applied AI Research team works on innovative solutions to solve practical real-world problems with direct impact on users of the OpenAI API. We work on open-ended research projects to enable successful products. We care about solving real-world problems, while keeping our products up to a high safety standard. About the Role

To help API users monitor and prevent unwanted use cases, we developed the moderation endpoint, a tool for checking whether content complies with OpenAI's content policy. Developers can thus identify content that our content policy prohibits and take actions (e.g. block it). We seek a Machine Learning Engineer to help design and build a robust pipeline for data management, model training and deployment to enable a consistent improvement on the Moderation model. 

In this role, you will:

• Design, develop and maintain a robust and scalable data management pipeline and set up standards for versioning and data quality control. The pipeline should be able to handle data relabeling requests due to content policy changes.
• Build a pipeline for automated model training, evaluation and deployment, including active learning process, routines for calibration and validation data refresh etc.
• Work closely with stakeholders from product, engineering, content policy on a long-term improvement over the moderation models, for both external release and internal use cases across a variety of projects on model safety.
• Research on the latest techniques and methods in deep learning and natural language processing to improve the moderation model across a collection of unwanted content categories.
• Experiment on data augmentation and data generation methods to enhance the diversity and quality of training data.
• Experiment and design an effective red-teaming pipeline to examine the robustness of the model and identify areas for future improvement.
• Conduct open-ended research to improve the quality of collected data, including but not limited to, semi-supervised learning and human-in-the-loop machine learning.

• Have 3+ years industry experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Software Engineer, working on building data pipelines, training and deploying machine learning models in production on a daily basis.
